[By Kim Heung-sik BUSAN] The Renault Group’s Busan plant, a global strategic hub, has surpassed a cumulative production milestone of 4 million vehicles, 26 years after its launch in the Korean market in 2000.
According to Renault Korea, the Busan plant produced approximately 2.2 million vehicles for the domestic market and about 1.8 million units for overseas markets. The most produced model at the Busan facility was the mid-size sedan SM5, with a total of 954,000 units manufactured. The SM3 and Nissan Rogue followed, recording 805,000 and 585,000 units respectively.
At the commemorative ceremony celebrating the 4 million vehicle milestone, Renault Korea President Nicolas Paris said, “The greatest driving force behind producing more than 4 million vehicles at the Busan plant has been its world-class quality competitiveness and the outstanding capabilities of our employees.” He added, “Based on the excellent competitiveness of the Busan plant and its workforce, we will use this 4 million cumulative production milestone as a new starting point and move forward even more strongly toward achieving 5 million units.”
The Renault Korea Busan plant plays a key role as a major production base in Renault Group’s ‘International Game Plan 2027,’ supported by its superior quality competitiveness. It has also ranked among the top tier in key quality management indicators across Renault’s global manufacturing facilities, further solidifying its status as a central production hub for global strategic models.
In particular, the plant has secured high production flexibility by establishing a mixed-model manufacturing system capable of producing up to four platforms and eight vehicle models on a single production line. In January of last year, through production facility upgrades, it became the first Korean automaker to convert an internal combustion engine production line into one capable of assembling electric vehicles.
Based on this capability, the plant has positioned itself as a future mobility production hub capable of simultaneously manufacturing internal combustion, hybrid, and pure electric vehicles, including the mid-size SUV Grand Koleos, the global flagship crossover Filante, and the Polestar 4.
